Meet the Candidates

Meet the candidates running for county and party office in the June 6, 2023 Primary Election in Camden County--Kate Delany & Sam Sweet for Camden County Commissioner as well as progressive Democratic County Committee candidates in Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Merchantville and Runnemede.

Camden County Commissioner Candidates

Kate Delany
A lifelong South Jerseyan, Kate grew up in Maple Shade and now lives in Collingswood with her husband, two kids, and two cats. Kate serves as the head of South Jersey Progressive Democrats and was formerly municipal chair of the Collingswood Democratic Committee.

Kate is passionate about environmental issues and improving democracy in South Jersey. Kate has been participating in good government organizing, both in Camden County and throughout the region, for numerous years. Her good government work includes initiatives such as Public Meeting Report Card to help evaluate local government’s interaction with constituents, various resources to help citizens decode local government budgets as well as a citizen journalist site, SJ Advance, that helps elevate citizens’ voices and experiences of their local democracy. Kate is particularly proud of South Jersey Progressive Democrats’ successful ghost-busting of the phantom candidates that the Camden County Democratic establishment has long recruited to run in elections and mislead voters.

When she isn’t busy with community organizing, Kate enjoys reading, writing, sewing, and gardening. On her tiny plot of suburban land, Kate grows veggies, fruits and herbs, all 100% organic and pesticide-free.

Sam Sweet

With the exception of the time he spent in getting his degrees in Criminal Justice and Accounting at the University of Delaware, Sam has been a resident of Camden County for the better part of 40 years. Sam Sweet has been a Camden County resident since 1972 when he moved here with his parents from NYC.  He is a graduate of the Class of 1986 for Cherry Hill East.  Sam currently resides in Erial which is in the southern end of Gloucester Township.

Sam is a small business owner of an accounting firm that specializes in tax prep planning and consultation.  When not at work Sam can be usually found on a baseball field or soccer field coaching one or both of his kids.  When not there he can be found at the Gloucester Township Council meetings preaching transparency and good cash management skills to the members of Council as one of its residents.  Additionally, Sam is a co-author of the now infamous Gloucester Township “Citizens Budget” (can be found at www.restoregt.com) which has proven to be more accurate than the budget put out by the current administration.

Sam promises to bring that passion to the office of County Commissioner.

Dorothy and her husband Joe raised three children and have lived in Merchantville for 24 years. She has applied her organizational skills to a variety of positions in town: volunteer for Main Street Merchantville, fundraiser to build the Community Center playground, founder of Citizen Power! No Cell Tower!, (defeating plans for a 150’ cell tower), writer for the Merchantville Observer, leader of the local Girl Scout troop and founder/ leader of St Peter’s Track and Field program. Currently Dorothy leads the Merchantville Green Team, a group of dedicated residents implementing actions that make Merchantville more sustainable and resilient. Working closely with the Borough, Dorothy helped the town achieve a Bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey, unlocking grant opportunities, two of which were recently awarded.

Dorothy is active in Camden for Clean Air, which is focused on improving our region’s air quality and holding corporate polluters accountable.  Her work has helped with opposition to the Covanta trash incinerator’s plan to burn liquid industrial waste, already our county’s #1 industrial polluter.  She was also instrumental in getting a resolution passed in Merchantville against the plan to transport massive quantities of dangerous liquefied natural gas on rails and highways less then a mile from the town’s borders. Her passion for the environment inspired her to become a certified Rutgers Environmental Steward and for her capstone project, she chose the renovation of Merchantville’s Community Garden. Recently her environmental advocacy work has led her to cross paths with the good work of the South Jersey Progressive Democratic Party. Dorothy is now a proud member and looks forward to making a contribution.

Merchantville voters in 2021. He is an attorney with 35 years of experience helping individuals

ideals of democratic values such as: open and transparent government; supporting workers,
families, and children; protecting our environment; and embracing the concepts of diversity,
equity and inclusion in our society. Joe speaks out against a system of government that often
rewards the powerful and well-connected, to the detriment of those without a political voice,
especially people in marginalized communities. Joe is active as a volunteer, serving on the
Board of Merchantville-Pennsauken Little League and as a member of the Merchantville Green
Team. He also is a member of Camden for Clean Air, an environmental advocacy group
opposed to the continued operation of the Covanta incinerator in the City of Camden, which is
the single worst industrial air polluter in Camden County. He has further engaged in the effort to
prevent the dangerous transport of Liquified Natural Gas by train and truck through our area.
