SOUTH JERSEY PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS
Endorses Lawrence Hamm for U.S. Senate, Amy Kennedy for U.S. Congress, Jack Surrency, Tracey Wells-Huggins, Donna Pearson for Cumberland County Freeholders
(NEW JERSEY) –The South Jersey Progressive Democrats (SJPD) enthusiastically announced endorsements of Lawrence Hamm, for U.S. Senate, Amy Kennedy for Congress, and Jack Surrency, Tracey Wells-Huggins, Donna Pearson for Cumberland County Freeholders.
The 2020 election endorsements were announced after members voted at the SJPD virtual general meeting after members met the candidates.
On Lawrence Hamm: “South Jersey Progressive Democrats are proud to endorse Lawrence ‘Larry’ Hamm, candidate for U.S. Senate. The last three years have taught us that we need an authentic voice to stand up to Donald Trump in Washington. A voice that stands for human rights, accountable and transparent government, racial and social equity, economic justice, environmental justice, and workers’ rights - Lawrence Hamm is that voice! Hamm has the experience and shared values to build unity and repair democracy as New Jersey’s next Senator,” Kristen Affrime, SJPD Communications Chair
On Amy Kennedy: “I am excited for South Jersey Progressive Democrats’ endorsement of Amy Kennedy, a former educator, mental health activist and defender of workers rights. Her platform reflects awareness from lived experience of the promise and challenges of South Jersey, from the need to commit to quality jobs to the need for environmental innovation to save the shore. Amy Kennedy has the ability to defeat the last Democrat foisted on the region by the Norcross machine, Jeff Van Drew. Her win will be a meaningful win for Democrats, and for democracy, in South Jersey,” Kate Delany, SJPD President
On Cumberland Candidates: “South Jersey Progressive Democrats are proud to endorse Jack Surrency, Tracey Wells-Huggins and Donna Pearson for the office of Cumberland County Freeholder. Their platform of transparency and meaningful community engagement is what South Jersey residents need from county leaders. We need freeholders who will scrutinize public contracts and oppose insider deals. The Cumberland County Freeholders’ platform includes responsible oversight of county entities and increased job access through improved transportation which are both economic and social justice issues,” Bill Johnson, SJPD Organizing Co-Chair
South Jersey Progressive Democrats (SJPD) began as a grassroots organization in 2017 and grew to provide a well-organized county-wide challenge to the Democratic machine candidates in 2019. The SJPD has been successful in building progressive coalitions across New Jersey. By identifying candidates for endorsement, the group is continuing the work of restoring democracy to New Jersey.
